Behind the Name

Galloway Stud was named after the, now extinct, native horse the Scottish Galloway. This breed was renowned for their toughness and amazing endurance. They were the first true racehorses in Britain and are recorded in many historic reports racing all over the country for wagers and trophies, including at Newmarket as far back as 1681.

It is said that the three foundation Stallions arrived into Port Patrick in Galloway where they were then bred to some of the local Galloway mares starting the thoroughbred program. So it seemed fitting that as we specialise in breeding broodmares that we adopt the name.

About Us

Stuart has lived alongside thoroughbred horses all of his life. Stuart moved to Newmarket in 1988 to pursue a career in the stud industry. Over the years he has worked at some of the top studs in England and Ireland. With his wealth of experience he then went on to Manage Lofts Hall Stud where he built the Stud into one of the most respected and leading consigners at the Tattersall sales. It resulted in him winning the Godolphin Stud Staff award in 2016.  Stuart started Galloway Stud in 2016, initially based in Chrishall Grange and subsequently moved in 2019 to the fantastic facilities in Woburn Park. Through this he can offer all his knowledge and expertise to new and existing clients giving them peace of mind that their horses are in the best of care.

Carmen, alongside running her own yard, has worked extensively with competition horses and for the last four years has been a partner in Galloway Stud involved with all aspects of its management and daily running.
